Paying For A New York City Direct Cremation Service

City Funeral Service requires full payment prior to the cremation.

Acceptable methods of payment are:

  • Cash
  • Visa, Mastercard or American Express credit cards
  • Debit cards bearing the Visa or Mastercard logo
  • Bank or Teller's Check
  • Money Order
  • Travelers Check
  • Personal check
  • Insurance assignment [Note: City Funeral Service will accept proceeds from a life insurance policy provided the policy is privately owned (not a group policy); the insurer must allow assignment of proceeds to a funeral home; the policy must be in force longer than two (2) years from the date or death OR past the policy's contestability period; and finally, the beneficiary must be present during the cremation arrangement conference to sign the required insurance assignment forms.]

Cash advance items (crematory fees, death certificates, gratuities, and outside funeral director expenses) must be paid by cash or check. City Funeral Service does NOT PROFIT from cash advances items, we include them on our bill and disperse the funds as a convenience to you, and therefore it is unfair for us to pay credit card processing fees for these items.

Credit Policy and Collection Information

City Funeral Service does NOT extend credit nor do we offer a payment plan.

Offering credit involves retrieving a credit report and then a trained individual (or a sophisticated software program) will assess an individual's credit worthiness. We are not qualified to judge a persons past or present financial situation and attempting to do so places us in legal jeopardy.

Accounts with outstanding balances are referred to a collection agency after 60 days.

Social Service Agency -
Social Security Information

City Funeral Service does NOT invoice any city or county welfare agency, religious organization, or social service agency for payment.

Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security do NOT offer a cash funeral or cremation benefit payable to a funeral home.

The Lump Sum Death Benefit of $255.00 offered by Social Security can NOT be assigned to anyone other than a surviving spouse or dependent child who lives at home. Additionally, the child (or children) must meet certain eligibility requirements before this benefit will be paid.

If you have no funds for burial or cremation and you reside in New York City, please contact the New York City Human Resources Administration and they possibly can assist you. If you meet their STRICT ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS, they will refer you to a cremation provider who accepts HRA payment. You may also wish to download this helpful manual if you have additional questions.

If you live outside of New York City, contact the county social service/welfare agency where you reside for their assistance.

Estate Information

City Funeral Service does NOT invoice an estate for payment.

Estate settlement can be a very complex process and many times survivors contest the Will of the decedent. It frequently takes many months (120 days is not uncommon) before the court allows funds to be distributed.

To maintain our viability as a low cost cremation provider serving the metropolitan New York area, we must insist on payment prior to the cremation.

Tax Information

City Funeral Service
Identification Policy and Procedure

Neither the New York State Department of Health nor the New York City Department of Health have any rules, requirements, policies, or recommendations regarding the identification of human remains prior to cremation, burial, entombment or shipment of a dead body out of state.

As a consumer, you have the RIGHT to request an identification of the body prior to the cremation. City Funeral Service will gladly accommodate an ID request should you ask for one.

An identification can be made one of two ways:

  • We can take a digital photo of the decedent and forward it to you via e-mail;
  • Up to four (4) family members or friends can identify the body in our funeral establishment. We allow fifteen (15) minutes for this private identification.

NOTE: An identification is NOT a public visitation period. If you wish to arrange a public viewing with an open casket and a service, please contact our office for options and prices.

Identifications are arranged during normal office administration hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM.

Preparing Yourself and Family Fembers
For The Identification

Before you identify the body, the staff of City Funeral Service will close the eyes and mouth of the decedent. The hair will be combed (towards the back of the head) and the face will be cleaned to remove blood or other body fluids.

The remains, covered by a sheet, will either be in the cardboard alternative container, on a transfer cot, or on a mortuary dressing table.

We will NOT perform cosmetic restoration on the decedent and no preservative chemicals will be introduced into the arterial system.

Although will will do everything possible to make the identification procedure a peaceful and stress-free experience, you should be aware that unembalmed dead human remains emit odors and discoloration and facial distention are common.

If you have any questions about any of the topics addressed on this page, please contact our office at (877) 274-5152.
